I built my son a gaming PC on a tight budget (to play Fortnite and replace the playstation 3 he previously used) from 2nd hand parts which I appreciate is always a minefield but to be fair he was up and running for around £200 so was very happy (PC is an i5-6400 with 8gb RAM and a GTX960 card).
It was working fine and he was very happy but unfortunately the graphics card developed a fault where the fans on the gfx card would stop spinning and the fps would drop to single digits so I gave him my old GTX770 and upgraded to a vega 56 for my system. I also took the opportunity to upgrade my monitor and donated my old Samsung Syncmaster 120hz monitor to him so he is running a 2 monitor setup with Fortnite running on the Samsung at 120hz.
The GTX770 is far more power hungry then the GTX960 it replaced and is causing his PC to shutdown when he plays Fortnite & I'm fairly sure it's due to the 450w PSU being woefully underpowered.
I do have the option of removing the Antec Earthwatts Platinum 550w PSU from my system and donating that, then upgrading my PSU as I wouldn't be surprised if 550w is too low for my system (i7-4790, Vega 56) although to be honest, whilst I rarely play demanding games, it hasn't shown any signs yet of not being able to cope.
Would you guys suggest I donate my 550w PSU and upgrade or should I just buy a budget 550w - 650w PSU for him (by budget I mean around the £50 mark from a known brand, not the dirt cheap ones)? Would anyone be kind enough to suggest both? Many thanks in advance for your advice guys.
