Dual booting XP and Vista 64, Vista seems fine.

Getting a popup claiming to be MS security centre which performs a scan followed by request for registration (MS Security centre registration??)

The scan claims to find all sorts of worms, trojans etc etc. There looks to be 2 security centre icons in the task bar, when trying to access websites I get a warning in the browser saying this site may be unsafe.

I'm sure you may need more information so ask away, any help would be appreciated!

Ta!

Dumb question on the way...if I do a full system scan whilst in Vista will it recognise and clean up my XP install? Avast won't start up in XP.

I would have thought so, if Vista can see you XP install just tell it to scan that drive, but be very careful in case the virus is in a system file. Best bet is to go into safe mode in XP (F8 on startup) and go from there.

If it is a known virus then a scanner in Vista should pick it up. Just make sure you choose what happens if it finds anything. As above, it may decide to delete an XP system file [and wouldn't care since it wouldn't be a Vista system file].

most virus scanners do not catch these fake scam viruses

and normally they ask you to click to allow them to "scan" which actually installs them on to your system

in my experience malwarebytes clears most of them
