Infinity 1 to 2 Speeds... not sure my line was set right?

Hi all,

I upgraded from Infinity 1 to 2 and then went away on holiday the next day. I got back 6 weeks later and tested the line and it shows around 55mb/s down and 17mb/s up.

The Infinity 1 package was getting maxed out at 53mb/s down and 10mb/s up before I left.

I had kind of stupidly assumed that the estimated connection (79-80mb connection) they did on my line would be active but it looks like the router is connecting at 60mb.

I live super close to the exchange in a fairly modern house (20 years old)..

Is there anything to do to check if my line has likely been set wrong or do you think its just likely that their estimation speed was complete ********!?

There isn't really any perks to me being on a higher package now basically..

Thanks

With VDSL, it is the distance to your green cabinet (not the exchange) that matters, but you must be very close if the estimated line speed was 80Mbps.

The first thing to do is to rule out any internal wiring issues. Remove the face plate from your master socket and you should see a test socket underneath, which is isolated from all of your internal wiring. Plug the router into this socket and see if your speeds pick up.

Thanks TJM - I've only ever been plugged into the test socket since moving into the house - infact I've only ever used the test socket for the last 10 or so years so it's not that sadly.

I've tried with everything off the network and the laptop via ethernet into the homehub but the speeds are still the same ballpark. The fact that the router shows its only connected at 60 means I guess it's synced with the exchange or whatever it does and says thats the speed I can get?

I do think thats wrong though given my location and maxing out infinity 1.

I'm probably about 100 meters from the exchange as the crow flies

This is the cabinet stats:

It looks like bt's line stats tool is broken at the moment though so I can't provide any details on that

your ISP has a profile on your account. they probably have not updated it to the new package. it happened to me when i moved from ADSL to VDSL.

Ok an engineer is coming out.. they say if its my fault its £129 fee.. I hope that doesn't mean if they don't find anything wrong! Fingers crossed... the upload seems to have updated when they changed it as its near 18 now rather than the old 10 cap. I'm just a bit annoyed they quoted such a high figure if it's not achievable and locked me into a 18 month contract!

You should have been given a "guaranteed minimum" connection speed which if they failt to meet you can leave penalty free.
That figure is usually very much on the "side of caution" - I'm guaranteed 65mb on my "up to 80mb" connection.

unless you wanted the faster upload speed then I wouldnt have bothered going to Infinity 2 if you were getting 53meg.

6 weeks holiday. Nice.

Ah well spotted stoofa! I hadn't actually seen this yet but rereading the email (I did it all via a call) I see they did quote a minimum:

How fast will it be?
We estimate your download speed will be between 79Mb and 80Mb, and your upload speed will be between 19Mb and 20Mb.

The minimum guaranteed speed you can expect from your BT Infinity will be 73Mb.

So I guess I'm about 13Mb shy.. a fair whack so worth an investigate!

I actually did mainly need the upload but I hate knowing the line should be better than it is so rattly to get it right.

I'm a web developer so it's pretty useful to make sure that I'm getting the most possible bandwidth out of the line

Thanks guys - fingers crossed!

Yeah, I had 3x on live chat but realised I was getting nowhere. The engineer is coming on Friday, thought I said that in the post above?

Ah yes missed that point. I wouldn't worry about the charge. If you've only got the modem connected to the test socket then no issue relies with you! ;)

What do your router stats show?

Doh...

So the engineer came - looked at the line couldn't see a single error or weird noise or anything to chase basically.
Went to the cabinet and said it was coming out at full speed and there was no block or limit on the line as he had thought it maybe a port issue or similar.
Came back to the house and fitted a new master socket with inbuilt filter which made no difference

Said he had nothing to chase so couldn't help any further. Really nice guy - I'm a developer so I know what it's like chasing after a problem with no symptoms..

Any thoughts on how I could proceed next?

He said it's very unusual for a down speed to be lower than quoted and the up speed to be almost full speed.

Router is connected as follows:

Downstream: 59022 kbps
Upstream: 18669 kbps

Sounds like the Opposite of my Issue with FTTC.. Quoted 80/20. Ended up with 70 down, and only 7 up, they couldn't find any problem when they came out.

I would make a post here: http://forum.kitz.co.uk/ There are Openreach engineers and broadband tech enthusiasts posting there who have seen it all.
