Infinity.

If I played actual games I'd probably play Infinity or another skirmish level game like it. I've got a few of the miniatures for painting purpose and they're really nice.

Sorry for the enormous thread necro - I assume someone will immediately link a more recent one but this is what search turned up.

Tried this the other day for the first time (have owned the miniatures over a year).
It's the most fun rules set I've encountered since Necromunda, and I say that as a man who lost both games played.

Both games came down to the final turn (that may sound silly unless you realise it's a set set # turns, not just 'stop playing, you won'), and in one case the final dice roll of the final possible action of the final turn!

Excellent miniatures too. If you get a chance to try a demo game, give it a whirl. Cheap (for this hobby) buy-in too, and the balance is such that as I understand it "I'm picking what looks cool" can still give a decent force (no 'this is the definitive best army comp until the next errata').

Thread Necro made me take another look. Nice minstures but holy **** it's expensive.

Maybe I've been out the minstures game for a long time but €90 for a starter pack? Considering you can pick up Deadzone the manic offering where you seem to get more stuff for about £45.

I've got some of the models already, and have the new starter on pre-order.

No1newts, it's expensive but not terribly so for a set with 14 metal mini's, the rules, dice, some scenery etc.

I ordered my set for £76 from Element games (who tend to be pretty good with orders).

Also, you can get all the rules free off their website, and can assemble starting forces from small boxes/blisters etc relatively cheap (though it is only relative).

The main reasons to go for the starter set are:
You like the paper books.
You like the two factions in it (i.e. you'd want the miniatures anyway).
You don't have any scenery (it's intended for very dense tables, you need scenery/boxes/piles of books/shoes, but the card buildings do look good).
Convenience.

Wow there is a thread for Infinity here huzzah....

The 2 big box sets that exist atm, Red Veil and Icestorm, include 2 brand new starter packs with RRP £31 for each one. Plus one exclusive miniature per army (another £8-10 each) that can only be found in this set, plus the Mototronica matt and buildings (£8.50 for that set).

Given that you can buy this from UK retailers at £50-55 is a good price imho if you plan to play Panoceania or/and Nomads. And if only one of those armies is interested to you, can see the starter box on ebay for around £25.

Same applies to Red Veil box, which includes Yu Jing and Haqquislam.

Red Veil box, might be more expensive atm, at £60. However imho is better bargain than the Icestorm if you want to start the game and you have no idea what armies to play. Reason is all models can be used and are worthy, while both armies are 170pts.

Only requires 1-2 models to have a good 200pts army. (300pts are the standard Infinity Tournament points). If you had pre-ordered the bonus pre-order mercenary will fill that gap and you are good to go.

In Infinity the average army will cost you around £35-40 (if you like TAGs) to be 300pts tournament ready. Is relative cheap skirmish game compared even to Warzone (Prodos), or the Argonauts. While is rich, and the rules while complex at the start, are not. And the starter set rulebook teaches 80% of the basic rules, when you do the missions.

Saying that, if you select Ariadna as your army, that will cost you tad more, because their very low points count, so you field more on the table.
But that's expected when their tech is 100 years old, fighting still with 21st century tech, motorbikes and cowboy hats, or worst, in the case of the Caledonia (Scottish), wearing kilts and carrying claymores

The above are the easiest armies for new player.
Ofc there are other armies in the game. Aleph (AI) fielding two sectorial armies, one based in Iliad (Hector, Achiles, Myrmidons) and the other in Indian mythology

There is also the Combined Army (the very very bad guys), and the Tohaa.

And in Infinity there is no "what's better army". It all matters what you want to play and the models you like.....

Do you want some crazy Knights with swords chopping everyone down in the name of the Catholic church? (Military Orders - Panoceania).

Something more elegant with swords and Ninjas?(Japanese sectorial - Yu Jing)

Want to be sneaky and have the significant majority as camouflage markers and not physical models on the table? (Ariadna)

Or something faster with motorbikes, shotguns and cowboy hats? (USAriadna - Ariadna).

Do you want a light infantry army, what hits like a sledgehammer, but is weak on the defence?(SAA - Panoceania).

Do you want some high tech artificial intelligence units, that have gazillion rules and low body count? (Myrmidons - Alpeh).

Do you want to burn the whole universe looking for transcendence? (Combined Army).

Do you want to hack (as computer hacking) your opponent hackable units and have a laugh? (Nomads have good hackers).

And everything else exists in between. What matters what models you like more, because Infinity has very beautiful models. And I urge you to see Angel Giraldez work on his blog and facebook.

How is it on skill vs luck?

Considering I've lost 80% of the games in our league, I'd say it veers more towards the skill end of the spectrum. :p The learning curve is steep at first and there's a lot to remember.

Having said that, it doesn't matter how tough your opponent is if you keep rolling crits (1/20 chance). :P

It's a great game if you're willing to invest the time and money.

Received the Red Veil box on Saturday.
By far the better than Icestorm if anyone wants to start the game.

The matt and buildings are far superior not only in quality but variety.
The whole inner package is better (no more separate boxes), while the armies are very balanced.
Same points etc.

Nice!
Trying to avoid splashing more cash until I have a minimum of 50% of my existing stock painted.

I would never be able to buy anything again if I had a rule like that. :D

I already have a few Zhanshi painted up so I'm hoping that I can get everything else in the box painted fairly quickly.

Is it wrong that the thing I like most about Red Veil is the faction-specific D20s? :p

I got Red Veil delivered a few days ago. First exposure to Infinity and I'm very impressed so far. The minis are superb, and the rule book is very well done.

Once I'm finished making a few Konflikt '47 figures, I'll start on the models and see how I like the game.
