Hi
I'm not very good with speakers so i thought i ask for help.

I have cambridge a5 amp that i'm very happy with and i run 2 budget floor standing speakers with.

My freind has just given me a centre speaker and was wondering if i could connect it to my amp without destroying anything.

You can't I'm afraid. The amp you have is stereo, so there is no connection for a centre speaker. You would need an AV receiver. AV receivers are basically amplifiers to which 5.1/7.1 speakers are connected.
