Hi all,

I'm very interested in getting an iPod Touch and just wanted some info before I order.

Firstly, how easy is the onscreen keyboard to use? I've tried one and it seemed a bit fiddly, but do you get used to it over time?

Also, how is the iTouch as an organiser? I currently have a Qtek Smartphone for all my organising stuff, but was looking at changing to a Touch and a smaller mobile. Would it be suitable?

Also, in general, are you happy with your iTouch? Once you got over the honeymoon period, was it still a wise choice?

Many thanks,
James

I got an 8Gb when they first came out. Would still say it was worth it. I have used it loads, the back is scratched to hell and the front like new. The onscreen keyboard I would say is the best out there and is fairly decent from the off. The more you use it the better it would get I imagine, but I dont type anything of length on it. As for organising, I dont use those functions, it is my mp3 player mainly, although with wifi and BBC iplayer has taken on other roles. I know it can put in your outlook calender IIRC.

Looking back I still think I prefer having my phone and entertainment separate. But iPhones are mighty tempting.

I have an iPhone and have used the iPod Touch.

1) Onscreen keyboard you get used to and is very very good. Best on a smartphone/device.
2) There are Calendar, Mail and Contacts apps which sync with the equivalent Mac programs or Microsoft Outlook. So should work well.
3) You will be blown away by the interface and how easy it is to use. It's by far and away the best at the moment. The App store is also a good feature.

I would recommend going to have a play with one somewhere and I'm sure you will fall in love with it before long!

Out of interest, can you sync with both outlook (on a windows pc) and ical (on a mac)...? Or is it still one pc only rule?

my missus loves her (new gen 8gig)
We have lots of toys, apple and PC based and it is by far her favourite, she takes it everywhere, I dont get a look in.
She likes that apple store too much aswell.
Would I recommend it yeah its a great bit of kit, just get a case for it straightaway, then no scratchs.

My boss bought me one for Christmas, 32gb.... It's awesome. But now I find myself wishing it were an iPhone... talk about ungrateful! :(

I was very skeptical about the keyboard before I had one, I always used to be a firm believer in a physical keyboard. However, I'm very very pleased with how the iPod Touch keyboard works- it is a dream for a touch screen device. Admittedly it is a fraction more fiddly in portrait mode than landscape, but still very very easy. Add to the fact that there is the wonderful auto-correct feature (that you can turn off if you want), you could have fat fingers and mash the keyboard in a roundabout fashion and still be typing accurately. Takes no time at all to get used to.

As an organiser, it's calendar, notes and email features are very easy to use and are suitable for most general needs I would say. I'm not a power/business user so I can't comment on features that say, PDAs would have that the iPod/iPhone doesn't. There are also many 3rd party utilties to check out if something is missing that you want.

In general, I love it. The interface is just amazing, I really enjoy using it. I've had mine since... well, whenever the latest revisions were released in October, and no regrets. Sound quality wise it isn't as good as Sony mp3 players, but in terms of overall functionality, it's perfect for me.

I got the 32GB version (late 2008), and I'm also very happy about it. It's also very thin (thinner than the iPhone 3G). The keyboard is something you get used to. When you turn off the Text Correction (latest firmware), it's really nice to use.

Like said previously, it has a very easy interface, calendar, Mail and a Contact List. So you can use it as an organizer.

And the good thing about the built-in wifi is that you can browse the web while sitting on your couch watching TV :)

You can also use MobileMe, to sync your contacts and appointments between all your Mac's and PC's (PC's can use Outlook).

how can you tell if you are buying the latest version (2nd gen?)

well most places are now only selling the 2g version. but for me the 2g came in the small plastic (nano style) boxes. I think the 1g just came in a black cardboard style box.

The second gen iPod Touch (it's NOT an itouch) is physically different from the first gen, the case is different and it has volume buttons.

I doubt there will be a new version soon, it's only been a few months since the second gen.
