Play Team fortress 2. Hats drop in game. You can also craft them in game with metal from weapons. You can also buy new games with pre order bonuses; which are hats!

2) what other items can you get from TF2 that are sellable

In the steam marketplace. You can sell promo items, crates, and store bought items.

3) what other games can you get items in that you can sell on the steam marketplace.
Dota2 for items and any game that drops steam cards.

Thanks[/QUOTE]

The best way to start is to sell weapons for one scrap, two weapons = 1 scrap, so you're making a profit of one weapon.

Item farming 101. Essentially it creates an empty server running in command line mode. You are connected to a server, therefore the game will give you item drops, but because it runs in a command line, it uses very few resources. Leave it running overnight and by the morning you'll have maxed out your drops for the week. Do that one night a week and you'll be grinding items in no time.

There's also programs which let you run multiple farming accounts, such as tf2idle. Lets you run steam accounts in a sandbox, therefore have several steam accounts logged in at once on one PC, have them all idle overnight and you get several accounts worth of items. And so on.

Pretty sure I got a TF2 hat despite never having played the game a few years ago, although it seems to have been replaced by a Portal 2 hat in my inventory now.

Textmode idling was destroyed by Valve last week. You now have to confirm every drop, so you only get drops while playing.
