inquire or enquire ?

in the context of "im writing to inquire/enquire if you have any vacancies"

i use inquire, but someone said im wrong, but it seems both mean the same thing and its maybe a personal preferance ?
which is it supposed to be ?

I'd say enquire.. Inquiry looks wrong

inquire not inquiry
