Do any of the routers sold by OcUK have this feature? if so...

I am looking for a router with the QoS feature and must have 4 ethernet ports and wireless capabilties. It needs to be compatible with a virgin media modem.

The reason I am asking here is because none of the routers state weather they have it or not and like many other gamers, I want to be able to play games without the interference from other people sapping my connection.

The problem is my current router has no such feature and as soon as someone else uses a computer in the house, bandwidth for me is dropped by 75% when all they are doing is browsing the net and we have a 20mb connection.

cheers madteamkiller.

As long as you don't need 50mb throughput, wireless N or gigabit LAN built in then you want a Linksys WRT54GL - OcUK might not stock them but other places do. You then want to put Tomato firmware on it. There's nothing else worthy of recommendation.

TO start with QOS will not resolve your situation. QOS prioritses certain packets flowing through a router over other traffic. I.e. Game traffic over web browsing traffic.

What your trying to achieve by the sounds of things is do traffic shaping. Traffic would not to 25% if all they were doing is web browsing, they are not going to use 15mb of bandwidth, or more specifically 1.5mb of speed.

You need to get traffic shaping enabled and use the tomato firmware which "i think" allows you to do that

If you want to do traffic shaping and got an old pc around (at least pentium 233)
try installing Smoothwall and you got yourself a proper traffic shaper.
You need a switch and AP and 3 nics (for smoothwall interface) for these to meet
your needs though but a cheap one will do.

Tbh that won't matter, tomato can do all that, without the need for separate box. Tbh, the 54gl is easily the cheapest and easiest way to do this. If you really needed gigabit/n the you'd be best just plugging a switch and access point into the gl since tomatoes only n/gigabit build i very much a beta.

if somebody is using bittorrent and they have encryption turned on, the QoS on the router will not be able to slow it down.

QoS typically involves prioritising traffic based on port/address, encrypting that traffic won't make any difference.

Torrent's punch through any port, which is why the tomato raf mod with mac limiter is so popular..
