Insane temperature of 2900xt

I installed my new 2900xt on Friday and was initially quite pleased with it. However, after a marathon 6+ hour gaming session on Saturday, I started to have some problems. I had a couple of bsod`s and once or twice the computer froze and I had to reboot. The only part I changed was the GPU and this has never happened before so the finger of suspicion pointed firmly at the new card. I had a feeling it was something to do with overheating so after work today i started to investigate. I`m only using 2x6 pin for power so i couldnt use Ati overdrive and got Ati tools instead. I set it up to monitor GPU temp and fan speed and was amazed to find it was idling at about 80 degrees and the fan was only spinning at 25%. I clicked on "Scan for Artifacts" just to see what it did and the temperature took off like a sodding space rocket. It went up to 96 degrees in about 15 seconds and was rapidly climbing and the fan never spun up any faster. I nearly NO SWEARING me pants. I bottled out at 99 degrees and climbing and turned it off. I played with the fan speed settings, turning it up to 100% at which point it sounded as though my PC was going to take off and the temp slowly dropped to 70 odd. I`ve got it at 75 % now and its idling at 73 degrees. I know these cards are supposed to run hot, but surely this isnt normal? I was pleased with how quiet the card was up until i saw the temps, i`d rather have a noisy and cool card than one i could cook my breakfast on. Anyone else having trouble with these cards?

That aint right, I know when I went in game with my fan at 25% it was around 98 degrees and peaked at 100 degrees, amazingly no artifacts too , but with the fan at 25% idle was around 55 degrees.

Try using Riviatuner to read the temps.

Thanks for the reply, I`ll try that now.

[edit]
Well, Rivatuner tells me its idling at 58 degrees with the fan at 75%, so it must have been Ati tool misreporting the temps.

Which PC case are you using the card in ?? as it sounds like there not enough air flow inside your case..

Have you tryed checking the card temps with your PC case side panel off ??

case is just a bog standard el-cheapo £25 job i got from a computer fair about 5 years ago. I left a panel off the back to give me more air flow, but if the high temps continue i`ll take the side off.

You could have a dodgy heatsink that is not seated properly, if temps continue to rise as they are, i would consider an rma on it.

What fans does the case have ?? (EG 120mm front & rear etc)

Definitely something wrong there. I'd RMA the card. The fan should spin up from 34% to 37% as soon as it goes over 70C. 34% is almost inaudible and 37% is the 'loud' setting that you hear it revving up to occasionally in game. 100% is insanely loud but the card should never need to even go over 40% fan power.

At 75% fan it should be kept around 65C even while scanning for artefacts. You can either try reseatting the HSF yourself (potentially voiding warranty) or RMA it. The fact that the fan isn't speeding up as it should would worry be enough to RMA.

Have you got the beta version of ATi Tools? 0.27 I think is the first to support 2900XT cards.

Is your case on the floor? As I can deffenitly hear mine easilly at 31, I need to manually set it to 25% when I am on the desktop coz it is always at 31% even with the side of the case off, makes no diffo.

How much case cooling do you have?

The problem these days is that graphics manufacturers seem to be expect users to have a miniature wind tunnel, if you don't have a good healthy airflow then obviously the hot air is going to build up around the card and temps will soar.

That said my 8800GTS is fine with only minimal cooling.

Arent ATI notorious for getting hot, and take into account these cards are powerhouses in them selves...

My 8800 gtx idles at 68-70 in this weather, maxes out at about 88, thats hot but it seems to be perfectly normal, i also keep my fan at 100% too keep things cool....

It sucks but there you go...

I have 1x 120mm fan at the front sucking air in for ram and cpu fan, then 1 amber ultra quiet 80mm at the rear, 2x 80mm at the side, 1x 80mm at front bottom, seems to be ok, in normal weather the CPU is idling at 28 degrees and 55 load, I need a new case, got my eye on an icute one with a 250mm fan on the side.

case air flow is very important. i had very high temps (78c) before because i only had 2 fans but now i have 1x 140mm fan (in take) in the front, 2x 120mm side fans (in take) and 1x 120mm on the back (out take). the temps is 52c

Could me my problem...Am only using 7x 120mm fans and 2x 92mm fans in my case.(plus there a 135mm fan in the PSU.) :p

I would get some 120mm fans but my case only supports 80mm fans :(, cant afford the new case with the 250mm fan aswell :(
