Hey all,

Been suffering recently from a spate of instability issues finally resulting in the machine refusing to boot (even into safe mode) a re-install of the OS resulted in the machine crashing halfway through the re-install process. These crashes are extremely un-informative! i.e. no blue screen etc, they just either re-set the system or just freeze the screen.

I have had the 7800GTX out and tested that, all seems fine, and now I have re-seated all components inside the PC.

I have been running Memtest next and with both pieces of memory in the PC (2 x 1gb PC3200 OCZ EL Duall CH Plat Edition) I received one error on test 7, with 1 pass.

I have then removed the memory and re-run the test with single pieces in the first memory slot on the mobo individually and with 2 passes each no errors turned up on either piece of memory.

One of my many questions is, is this more likely to be a memory error or a motherboard error? Remember, 2 pieces of memory loaded = 1 error, individual pieces of memory = no errors??

I am currently stress testing the CPU, but I know of no ways to test a motherboard for stability / errors etc?

Thanks for any wisdom...

Afraid not, everything surrounding me is Intel :(

I've been running a torture test on Prime95 for about an hour with just one piece of RAM loaded and seems fine - am about to do the same again with both bits loaded....

my mate had a similar problem it turned out to be the memory controller on the mobo....one stick would work but two it would keep bsod and freezing under load and memtest86 showed lots of errors. All the facts pointed towards the memory but it was infact the mobo as he tried different dual channel kit and the same thing happened even on 2.8v and stock timings / mhz.

I think you might be right with the pointing to the mobo.

I'm still running Prime with both Ram chips in, so we will see how long it holds out, but there is no doubt the instability when trying to run the machine 'proper'.

Next question would be what do I replace the mobo with? Same as? or something newer that is backward compatible with my CPU and other peripherals?

CPU is AMD A64 4000+ SD core.

Ta.
