So it begins. Uses a Yoti service whereby you are verified via a video so no ID is required to be uploaded.

Users changing their date of birth to that of an adult can upload a video of themselves to prove their age.

Meta, which owns Instagram, says the technology cannot identify anything about users except their age and it and Yoti will delete images once this has been done.

Cue the odd 13 year old lad who's sporting a full on beard able to bypass video verification.

Not only that what stops someone else verifiying for someone else and on another note if the image verification is deleted once finished with on yoti servers does that mean you can verify over and over and over again.

How is it possible for this to be in any way accurate? I mean it can be tough at times as a human to pinpoint someone's age. I can't see how an AI could possibly determine this, accurate down to the year.

Maybe they have been collecting and testing face id photos and personal photo album selfies to get it right?

Seems a massive security and data privacy risk.

They not collecting data (or so they say). They verify via an automatic process and then (they say) the info is deleted via a 3rd party authentication service.

If you're taking a video/selfie, which is being processed on their servers, they're collecting (and processing) data

They are not collecting it. It sounds like it's processed on the fly by AI.

I think the gov wants a central ID system. It looks like Yoti and social media is now the beginning steps.

Lets see what happens with this over the next year.

I'm playing with Yoti to see what it's all about. It appears to me it's an app for full on verification and now a valid way to identify yourself.

I've just found something in the Yoti app that states the following. It looks like the app itself does store a photo but I'm not sure IF Instagram does while checking it via AI. Guess someone would need to read the small print when it comes.

Yeah, Meta totally won’t keep and use that data for their own benefit, will they?

They will need to provide an opt out. I have no idea what these companies will be allowed to store and what not. Check the small print when / if it comes.

Holy crap I never knew this. Your passport contains a chip with your details and your photo stored in it! I thought it was just paper.

I've signed up to this yoti so I can find more info about it and it asked me to place my phone on my passport, closed, and it read the data inside the chip.

Yeh.... this is a gov thing for sure!
