Recently got hold of a copy of Vista 64 ultimate, trying a clean install I get through the initial setup and then i get a BSOD and 0x000007E Stop.

My Spec is :

Q6600 quadcore 2.4Ghz
ASUS Maximus Formula X38
Corsair 8500 DDR2 4 gig
WD Raptor 150gig SATA
GeForce 9800GX2 1 gig

After the 1st time the vista installation does a reboot it keeps getting same STOP over and over again.

So far, I have changed the ram, tried 1 gig, 2 gig, 4 gig. Tested all memory, no faults.

BIOS is fully upto date.

I have tried 2 different GFX Cards, 8600 GT, and my 9800 GX2.

I tried a new HDD.

After 6 attempts at a clean install, I put XP back on for the time being.

Dont know what else I can do, any ideas?

What condition is the Vista disc in, cant imagine thats the problem though but worth checking

Yeah disk is fine, no visible scratches or marks. I have not tried a new optical drive yet, I will try one tommorrow maybe.

Can you beg/borrow a single different branded ram to try ??

Can't rem offhand which ram but that mobo can at times be fussy when OS being installed

ps: IDE burner/cd also if you're using sata

Maybe worth a shot ;)

Quick update, I checked the sata drivers, they were fine, the vista 64 disk I am using has SP1 included. I did manage to "borrow" a different brand of ram so started another clean install (attempt #8) and the install was a complete success, no BSOD and no other issues. This was with an 8600 and a WD Raptor with 1 gig of ram. I completed the install and had a working version of vista 64 w/o installing any drivers.

I then rebooted with my corsair ram and 9800 GX2 GFX card, booted fine, tried installing the GFX card drivers, then i had the first of many BSOD. Spent an hour playing with the BIOS, still no joy, decided to put the 8600 and other ram back in and still had constant BSOD.

Looks like the issue is the combination of the 9800 and the raptor, have ordered a SATA DVD Drive and I will "borrow" an IDE HDD to test later in the week. Guess I'll be back to XP by the weekend.

Thanks for all the advice.
