i don't have a disc drive for my new pc and i need to install stupid sage software which is on a disc.

i have access to a laptop. not mine. is it possible to use the disc drive on the laptop, to install the software on this new pc?

thinking perhaps software that makes an image of the disc and then get an image mounter for the new pc, but wondered if there was anything easier as it's not my laptop so want to avoid installing software on that if possible.

Depends if there is any kind of copy protection, etc. there is also software that can share an optical drive on a LAN (as an actual drive not just sharing the location as a normal network share).

You can make a network share of the cd drive.

Or buy a ~£15 USB cd drive, they come in very very handy.

thanks. is it just as easy as right clicking the cd drive and select share?

honestly in the last 5 years i can't think of a time i needed a cd drive. i thought i'd need one to install the os, but turns out usb can do this. other than this old version of sage i hope to never need cd drives again

The other option is to use ImgBurn to make an ISO of the disk and copy this to a flash drive.

Then install Virtual CloneDrive on the PC, mount the disk image and run it.

Little long winded at first but may be better in the long run if you don't want to buy an external drive.

Edit; sorry just read your post again - ImgBurn however is a very small bit of software and easily removed again :)

I'm having issue with the installer saying sage is running so it won't install.

I've heard of issues with trying to install an older version of sage when a later version is currently installed. As I've got a later version installed already I'm wondering if this is the case, or if it's because of the CD share, iso mounting.

Any experience with installing the way I am trying to put an older version on after installing a newer version?

As above what version of Sage is it?

Don't know if it's possible for you, but at work due to newer PCs having no disk drives, the Sage support gave us a link to an installer on their site. Although even then the installer (v23) is a bit iffy that doesn't always work...

i've checked sage services. 4 were running. stopped all but hasn't made any difference unfortunately.

i am the only one logged in, and did a restart as well to double check something isn't running i wasn't aware of.

could i try booting into safe mode to install sage?

the version i'm trying to install is sage instant account v20 2014. i currently have sage 50 accounts essentials 2016 version 22

Why you want to install older version? I don't think that will work because I guess you cant convert data back to older version so the only way to upgrade to latest version.

I found the current latest version for Sage 50 accounts essentials is v24 as you are now at v22 so you will need to upgrade, not downgrade.

Also I found guides how to install and upgrade Sage 50 accounts.

Prepare to install Sage 50 Accounts

http://ask.sage.co.uk/scripts/ask.cfg/php.exe/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=36807

Upgrade to the latest Sage 50c/50 Accounts

http://ask.sage.co.uk/scripts/ask.cfg/php.exe/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=36906

Make sure you backup Sage data first then try these steps to install or upgrade Sage 50 accounts, if it still not worked then try uninstall Sage 50 and reinstall again or from Sage Instant Account v20 2014 DVD. Fail that then I guess you can try login Sage website and download to install latest Sage 50 v24.

I'm not looking to remove the newer sage but install the older one too due to 2different businesses.

It's far easier to have one version of sage for one small time business, and another version of sage for the other. Also easier as who the copies of our accounts go to match the version of sage they are looked at on.

2 versions works fine as on my last pc it worked, however previously I installed the oldest first, then the newer one installed too.

Was that still with v20 and v22 on the previous setup? When we was deploying v23 in a new office, someone mucked up and installed v24 as well, but it messed up the v23 install. A clean uninstall and reinstall didn't work so we ended up doing a fresh image just to save time.

Another thing I noticed, make sure to run the installer in admin mode. For some reason the installer itself doesn't prompt that and will fail to properly run without it.

in the end i've solved the issue by uninstalling the latest version of sage, deleting a load of folders left behind, which finally allowed the old version to be installed, and then reinstalled the new version. thanks all for the help
