Install two OS?

Can I install two OS on my system? I have two hard drives.... Thought I could....

I tried to install XP on the other hard drive (vista ultimate on the main hard drive) but i got a error and both windows so had to format...

Question -

My set up will be:
Drive 1 - Partition for XP, Partition for Vista
Drive 2 - Partitioned into 4 sections: M - Music, G - Games, P - Programmes, O - Other.

Now, when I install a programme, do I need to indtall it through toe OS I will be running it on or can i install on any and use the programme on any OS installed?
