Hi everyone,
I've recently completed a new build, (X6800, AW9D-Max, 2GB Corsair XMS2, etc.)
I tried installing windows onto it this morning, I have a fresh ISO image of XPSP2 (from MSDN) on CD. However the system refuses to boot from the cd, complaining about a 'non-system disk or disk error'.
The iso image is fine, I can double-click setup.exe on my old pc and it launches properly.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Incidentally, the DVD drive is a Plextor PX-760A, although I've also tried a basic LG dvd drive.

Thanks,

Trip

The bios sees the FDD,HDD, and DVD drive. The CDR (verbatim) is on Plextors compatibility list, the DVD is set as the first boot item, and I can hear it accessing. It should just go into the o/s installation but unfortunately it just complains that its a non-system disk, instert system disk and press enter.
The iso image copied perfectly and works in my old system so I'm at a bit of a loss to explain this one.

Thanks for the replies. I've tried two different sets of cables, and both connections on each. I even connected the DVD drive to its own specific power cable in case it was a juice problem. No luck I'm afraid.
At the moment I'm downloading Knoppix Linux-on-CD. If that fails to boot then I've got some sort of weird comms issue.

The disk is fine, I had originally copied an older iso (no service pack) image to a different cd. So to rule that out I downloaded XPSP2 from MSDN this morning, burnt it to cd, and then tried to execute setup.exe from it, and it was fine on my old pc. So I'm pretty confident about the disc and the iso image on it.
I'll see how I get on with the Linux install, should be another 90 minutes or so before download completes. Thanks again.

Hmmmmmm strange, i'd have to wonder if you have a hardware fault somewhere, hopefully not.

Tried clearing CMOS?......... could be an odd setting somewhere?......

I know with my board, even if i disable sata or ide ports it still picks then up in the main bios screen that lists the drives.

Thanks Buddy, but Nah, the linux install didn't work either. I've already restored the board to original and optimized. To be honest, I hadn't touched a thing in the BIOS at this early stage.
The mobo reports FF, on the Abit LCD display on the board - which indicates its good for an O/S load. This is melting my head at this point. The cd is good, my old pc recognizes it and wants to start an install. The physical drive appears good, I can hear it churning. Shirley someone else has had these snags and knows a way out?

Guys, I'm approaching desparation (actually gone way past it), please, any help at all would be appreciated.

Thanks,

mk17

Do you think the mobo could be fried, but still recognize the DVD?

Got my maulers on an LG super multi this morning. Connected it to the usb port at rear, and the installation is going ahead nicely.
I think I'm looking at a weird driver issue, or need to flash the BIOS on board to a later version. Both of my IDE DVDs work with my older pc (3 year old Dell precision 360), so I'm at a bit of a loss to explain it.
Anyway the XPSP2 is installing atm so no complaints.
Thanks for all your help.

I think the problem might be that you have the IDE RAID functionality enabled in the BIOS. Even if its not setup for RAID it can stop things from booting as it isn't configured as any sort of drive or RAID in the RAID setup firmware. Try disabling the RAID functionality in the BIOS and see if that helps.

IDE SATA RAID ROM is actually set to enabled in the bios. I'm mid install atm, so I'll disable it afterwards and see how that goes. Thanks for this, I was beginning to suspect the IDE connection on the mobo.
