Installation problems

I'm currently trying to fix my brothers Sony Vaio VGN-NR10E laptop.

It failed to load the current version of windows vista installed on it (unsure why)
So having a spare copy of windows 7 i'm trying to install that.

It gets to the starting windows screen and then just hangs - I've test the memory and that's fine.

Any ideas why it wont get to the installation section?

Is the HDD ok ? Format went ok ?
Try installing XP, I've has issues installing Win7 on old VAIOs.

How did you test the memory? Memtest86+? Overnight?

HDD issue the next most likely culprit. As above try a copy of XP?

i had similar issue, turned out to be mobo?

well it stayed on the starting windows screen for 3 hours, then in stalled windows 7 taking an other hour. but now it boots up quickly and is working fine.

not sure why though

could be naff HDD?
