Installed new RAM, system will not boot

Hi

I just purchased some new RAM, the Kingston Hyper X 2 x 4GB.

I took out my old RAM and put in the new, and now I am getting 3 long beeps, which indicates a RAM issue. The DRAM light is also on.

I have taken out the new sticks and put the old ones in. Same problem. I have also tried one stick of the old and also the new in the different slots. Same problem.

I have no idea what has happened, or where to go from here.

Any advice?

Quick question, why did you change/upgrade the RAM? Was it an error? If so defo mobo. If there was no error, you want to email Kingston.

Yeah. it is an ASUS Crosshair IV so it is really easy to do as there is a button on the back.

Just wanted more RAM. A friend has the same mobo and is using it fine.
 
I take it you've tried cleaning out the RAM slots?

Only needs some dust to get in there when you're taking out the old RAM / putting in the new to cause a short.

Often when I've upgraded RAM I've had to get the compressed air out.

I had to do it the other week myself. Took old RAM out, put new RAM in, put old RAM back in the spare slots. Got nothing on boot. Not even a beep.

Was the same after putting it back the way it was. Had to take all the RAM out, clean all the slots and clear the CMOS - then it booted fine.

Has anyone ever heard of faulty RAM taking out a mobo?

I have a replacement (Sabertooth) before I send the Crosshair IV for RMA, but am not sure whether to test it in the new mobo?

The fact that after it happened it would not take my older fully working RAM, or the new RAM, leads me to believe the RAM did not cause it, I might have done something myself to the motherboard?

That's a real pain, I like technology but hate it when it goes wrong! Glad I have two similar builds I can swap bits over to test any faults. Finding the faulty part is usually the hardest part.
 
It is times like this I wish I had a really basic rig for testing stuff. All those bits I have sold for peanuts in the past as they have got 'old'. Would have a nice testing rig for about £50 which is what I got rid of them for.

Made the same mistake myself. Will be keeping spares when I upgrade this time and getting a cheap case to bung them in just.
 
I have plenty of spares for skt775 but not for skt1155, just the otherday finished putting together my i2500k build and got the code45 error(for ram slots 3&4) seems like may have bent pins in the cpu socket tho didn't put the cpu in the wrong way or use excessive force(not sure about other brands but asrock seem to to have problems as seen others have same problem), don't have a 2nd skt1155 mobo or sb cpu(have 2 sets of 8gb pc12800 1600 c8 ram tho).
 
Well I managed to install the new mobo last night (with a new SSD) and took the gamble of trying the old Patriot RAM which works fine.

The new Kingston RAM has been RMA'd so I await for the response.

Whatever happened, it took out a very expensive Crosshair IV mobo which is now also going to be RMA'd.

I hate PC's sometimes. :(
