installed the home edition on this computer and for some reason my multiplier is skipping between 9.6 - 6 which isn't good, especially when I had 3.495GHz previously.

I've reset all the bios settings yet for some reason it's still doing it :(

cpu - Intel E8500
MB - Asus Rampage Formula

Thats Intel Speedstep, it down clocks the CPU when it is in an idle state which reduces temperatures and power draw. Nothing to worry about and if for some reason you feel the need to disable this feature it will be in your BIOS somewhere, I'm not familiar with ASUS boards so can't tell you where it is exactly.

that's a fricking relief.

this system was previously running vista and I'm almost certain it never did that before.

on my amd that was/is running the win7RC it's never adjusted itself in that matter, but would make sence as it's amd lol

it's not that I don't believe you toxic but can anyone else confirm this with their own experience going from vista/7?

cheers

I had a quick look in the advanced settings and saw the jobby, now checking it out :)

I'm sure I turned it off but still the same :(

have a read on that link :'(

I have definetly disabled the speedstep.

there's some other options there too but they do look like they aid the performance. On that bios page I can see the speed settings. It's set for 3.16GHz - 3.50 GHz but the clock is 9.5 with minimum 6 :(

I'll disapble everything there and then go back in bios and see.

thanks guys

p.s might be under power setting too as I just read, last look before sleep lol :)

got it.

disabled a few other options and windows had the restore from a save point and I have to reinstall CCC but it's working fine at 3.50GHz

I want it disabled because I have no issues with temps, especially when I'll put some Cool Laboratory liquid pro on there during the week too.

I didn't have it on vista and it was messing my benchmarks and overclocking my gpu as it was set around 2.2GHz with the 6x.

should I enable it?

I have the same thing. Windows 7 has power management features for your hardware components. in the start menu search type 'power' and choose 'change power savings settings' from the control panel option. You should see Balanced, High Performance etc. If you select High performance your cpu will run at 100% of the settings selected in Bios.

Under Balanced you have the option to choose your own minimum and maximum percentages. After having a little play around I have left mine on balanced. If you run something intensive and open CPUZ (or similar) you will see that your CPU is working at full capacity when it needs to. As soon as you stop it will drop to the default setting of 5%.

I turned off CnQ on my pc. I had stability issues when it was on... I tried PWM as well, but the temps skyrocketed the moment I did that. No idea why, but my pc just runs better when i leave that stuff disabled.

I had only just installed it and overclocked it and noticed the speed changing. I was tired last night and this morning re-read what toxic said and that actually makes a lot of sense.

I hadn't actually changed the power settings in the control panel to performance which I always have done so my guess is iff I did that I wouldn't have had any of the issues that appeared.

In two minds.

shall I leave it as it is or reset the bios and overclock the bus and so forth again and then change the power management inside windows?

I think that's best as I had to disable a few performance settings too in there (can't remember which at mo).

like I said when I was benchmarking the clocks went between both speeds.

not necessarily the best because that's when I need it although it's my back up pc
