Installed Windows 7 on an SSD, Problem!

Hello OcUK,

I installed Windows 7 on my new 64GB solid state drive, I planned to only use it for my operating system and the simulation ArmA 2.

ArmA 2 takes up about 40GB as I have many many addons, so I don't have enough room for my drivers.

Is there a way I can use the drivers from my HDD (Previously used for my OS, still has everything installed) for Windows 7 on my new SSD without reinstalling them?

Is this even possible anyway?

What you propose isnt possible.

Are you saying that the Win7 install and Arma2 install completely fill the SSD?

Why didnt you put the drivers on first?

Or are you saying theres not enough room to put the download drivers on your SSD to then double click and install them?

Base game is about 10Gb, so do you really use 30 Gb of addons at the same time?

I'd remove the least used ones, in order to install your drivers and then swap the addons in/out from your HDD when you need them in future.

Or buy a bigger SSD

Thanks for the replies, I've decided that I'll only use the SSD for smaller games that I play often. I do also have a few questions.

1. Is there any impact on performance while running the OS from an SSD and games from a separate HDD?

2. I have W7 on both the SSD and HDD (Prev install) and it gives me an error when I try launch any desktop shortcuts to a program on the HDD, something about the program not being installed properly.

3. Should I just format the HDD and reinstall my programs?

I've never used to drives together so I'm not too familiar with how it works.

You have to reinstall programs when installing windows. Programs install files in many different locations, and add items to the registry. There are not many that you can just run.

Thanks, did that. I have 38.8 GB left so was wondering if I could install all of my drivers (The ones that came with my hardware) onto my bigger HDD.

Is that possible?

The drivers are part of the windows installation, thats where they are installed too, you cant decide to just install them somewhere else.

windows is installed onto C: the drivers will install onto C:, you wont even get the option where to install them.

Another tip. Don't use the drivers off the cd's you got supplied with with your graphics card, motherboard and anything else you got.

Download the latest versions from the Manufacturer website. They release updates all the time and it fixes little bugs and niggles. The ones on the cd have of course been sitting in a warehouse for a while.
