I saw a post in the wanted thread that a 280x BIOS had been installed on a 7970 and it intrigued me.

How would I start by installing a 280x BIOS on my HD7970? I've done BIOS updates before, but nothing on a GPU.

I have the MSI HD7970 Twin Frozr III.

My guess would be use the BIOS from the MSI 280X Twin Frozr III, and hope it's just the same card with a different name and stock clocks (most 280X are).

I have a BIOS switch so if it goes wrong, I can use the primary one.

What about software to carry out the upgrade? Would MSI AB support this function?

You have to use ATI flash. I did look into it and someone has flashed the 280x gaming onto one.
But then I thought about it and figured whats the point as they are the same anyway, I even compared benchmarks and figured it wasnt worth risking it.

Will give it a try!

I don't see much risk in all honesty, my card has dual BIOS, so if it fails, I revert back :)

It's easy snips, I'll paste a couple of url's I have for it when I'm home... There's a good guide many people link to on techpowerup.

Is there actually any benefit to do this though? Like I said I did look into it, but didn't seem like you would gain anything?

Did you get any further on this?
I keep getting the bug to try and do it again lol

I've done this to my 7970 Matrix Platinum and flashed it with an R9 280X Matrix Platinum Bios. I ran some basic benchmarks before and after (Furmark 1080p benchmark, Tombraider Benchmark, Hitman Absolution etc etc) and on average saw a 5% improvement at stock figures. It also improved my mining hash rate from about 570khs to 710khs

have you got the tf3 oc be? Did you try the 280x gaming bios?
What happened after you flashed it?

Just overclock it to the same spec.

Unless the BIOS is unlocking voltages, shaders or otherwise what's the point? To change the name in the OS? Seems like a whole waste of time for that :p

Better powertune, lower stable volts, higher clocks? You can get all of those from using new bios', certainly from a mining perspective.
