installing 512 + 256mb into laptop

It's not essential to have sdram in pairs, so it should work as long as the new ram is compatible with the mobo.
Have you checked the existing ram to see if it's 2x128Mb sticks, or a single 256Mb stick? If it's 2 sticks, you may need to remove one and just have 640Mb (most laptops have only 2 slots).
If it doesn't work, try the 512Mb stick on it's own. If that doesn't work, it's probably not compatible, or you may need to alter the ram settings in the BIOS, if that's possible.

ive checked and its currently got one stick of 256mb pc2100 sodimm 200pin. Ive ordered 512MB PC2700 SoDIMM 200pin thats guaranteed to work with my laptop - looked up the laptop make and model on the website.

I have the same, my laptop came with 256mb PC2100 and I used a certain website to find out what ram was compatible and bought a 512mb of PC2700, it works fine with no probs at all (the PC2700 is obviously running at PC2100 speeds though!)
Out of curiosity what processor is the system running?
It almost certainly wont matter but some CPU's run the RAM in dual channel mode for increased memory bandwidth. However in your case it doesn't matter if it does or not as with only 1 stick of RAM it wouldn't be currently. Adding more RAM that doesn't match the existing stuff wont cause it to run slower (the opposite in fact).
