Hello

I'm upgrading to a msi pro z690-a with a i5-12400.

I'm reusing my 850W PSU which has served me well for years. Only problem is that it has only 1 CPU cable and the motherboard has 2 8 pin CPU sockets.

I've read around and the consensus seems to be it's not an issue to use just the one socket but wanted to triple check with this esteemed group

Thanks

It'll probably work, a single 8-pin can easily power a 12400.

Which model is it? You can get adapters if necessary (e.g. if the board doesn't start).

Yeah I think one socket would be enough, two will be for more power hungry chips.

I presume the board will boot with only one populated, but I have no idea.

1 8 pin cable will be absolutely fine. From memory the single 8 pin can provide way power more than the CPU can handle on normal (Air / AIO) cooling. IIRC its around 350w for a single 8 pin.

The only time I have ever needed more than one was with a heavily overclocked 7980XE that drew well over 450w under full synthetic load.

Thanks so much - really reassuring
