My en-suite is tiny, and has no windows but there are two external walls in the room.
It’s dark, small and we never really use it but I want to make it more appealing.
I want a light tunnel from the ceiling, she suggests if we are going to do anything, do it properly and put a window in.

Before I start getting quotes, has anyone had similar done and can share costs and any ideas/suggestions? I’m thinking a small double glazed window, first floor, lots of access as it’s above the driveway. Don’t imagine planning will be needed (it’ll be frosted). Cutting through a brick and rendered wall.

I suggested I could DIY a light tunnel but she said no. Probably quite sensibly!

I reckon it should be about £1500?

Light tunnels are OK, but if you can fit a window there is no comparison in terms of light in the room. Plus you get the benefit of being able to expel the moist air more easily when showering etc.

One of the guys in our office got one fitted recently but it was a slightly larger one than you'd be looking at and I'm sure he was about 2k give or take so your estimate won't be far off.
In terms of paperwork it would be best to contact planning to find out if it's under permitted development. They'll be able to give you a formal response ( keeps things right if you decide to move) you would need a building warrant though as you're altering the structure and fitting a lintel in but that would be work less than 5k so £150 fee to the council. Depending on what's above the window ( gable brick / roof trusses directly above) the chances are a robeslee type c lintel would suffice but peace of mind would involve a structal engineer
