I have just purchased a q6600 to replace my e2180,
It should be coming in the weekend.
Ive have been reading on the internet about installing a new cpu and using thermal paste( as perviously i didnt have to use thermal grease as my freezer 7 pro came pre applied)

can somebody recommend me the best paste to use,is there really a differnet between brands and el cheapo alaska stuff,

also is there any good way to remove the thermal paste from my heatsink without having to buy some isopropanol, anything i could use that i might already have at home>?

with my new cpu will i need to do a bios update>?

Most people suggest the proper thermal paste cleaners or IPA... MX3 is generally regarded as the best paste but arctic silver 5 is also pretty good. Your BIOS should be fine as I think all P35 boards supported the Q6600s straight away (Q6600s were released ages ago).

nail varnish remover then - if you are a student you probably use it...:-) & Sorry forgot - IP35 absoluitely fine with a Q6600..Should work with no bios update required

Lighter fluid does nicely too! Don't over apply the new paste though, thats almost as bad as not enough. I've always used arctic silver ceramique as I buy it in bulk for work :)

the TIM cleaner gives off a nice citrus smell tho :o

MX-3 is overpriced for the tiny drop in temperatures it provides. MX-2 is half the price and not far behind MX-3 in performance. It's easier to spread as well. Not sure about the bios update but i always run with the latest bios anyway. It's a good idea to clear cmos before booting as well.
