Installing an additional AMD HD5970 card with Crimson Beta drivers

Can anyone please advise if i can install an extra AMD HD5970 (Saphire OC) card in my current system and get it to work with the Crimson Beta drivers v15.12 (believe this is the last version to be supporting legacy HD6 and HD5 series cards)?

I've already got an identical Sapphire OC HD5970 installed and working ok.
I know they've been issues with Xfire cards with previous catalyst drivers.

I had got the 2 cards working a while back in X-fire fire, using some older Catalyst V13. drivers. But dont want to risk mucking my system up or spending days troubleshooting - if they wont work under the new crimson drivers.

If anyone can advise on a easy way to install the extra card, so its configures into X-fire mode, that would be appreciated too.

The HD5970 are still good cards, as long as you have a good psu. 2nd hand cards can be picked up for £60 - £80.

Many thanks

Current system:
i7 2700 @ 4.9Ghz
Win 7 - 64bit
16GB Ram
Asus P8-Z68-V Pro Gen3
Sapphire HD5970 OC x1 (with identical spare to install)

this LINK is for the latest HD5xxx drivers.
control panel > uninstall program > and you uninstall AMD software, completely, it's gonna reboot.
once back in you install the drivers on the link i posted, then it's gonna reboot; you then go to control panel, device manager, > display adapters, and check if the card is detected.
shut down the PC , install the 2nd card, boot it up, go to display adapters and check if both card are detected, if they are, shut down the PC again, and install the crossfire bridge ( dont push too hard on them ), then boot the PC, now go preferences > additional settings > enable crossfirex.
ready to go

I can't understand the use case for the 5970.

Your limited to the 2GB VRAM they have, which will mean modern games will be VRAM limited at 1080P.

Seems a much better idea to get a 7950/7970/280/280x/290x second hand, for a huge upgrade.

Even if you get the crossfire to work, as you said the 5970's are now legacy status, so no new working crossfire profiles.

Many thanks for the quick reply - I had installed both cards in the past, but couldnt remember the exact process - it was a bit of a faff i seem to remember.
I'll give it a go.
WRT to your last line "then boot the PC, now go preferences > additional settings > enable crossfirex. Ready to go"
Which preferences are you referring to? - device manager ? Control Panel? or Crimson?

Yes, I agree that HD5970s are legacy cards, but I've 2 in good working condition - so no additional costs involved. Just a single Sapphire OC @ 900 /1200 can just about match a 7970, and in many cases beat it - I only play 1920 x 1200 res. Most of my current games / flight sims are playing at High or mix of high and ultra settings. If i manage to get my 2nd Sapphire OC card Crossfired - i should get a good boost. Appreciate that Crossfire doesnt scale well on certain games.

I do have a 295x2 card - which i picked up cheap last year - but I'd need a new pc case and new PSU to install it all in. So saving up for a new set up later this year.

Your current setup should be fine with a 295x2. If your psu can power 2 x 5970's it should be more than fine with a 295x2.

This is what i thought and the 5970 is 2 gpus with 1gb each so 2x5970's would be 4 gpus with 1gb each

just sell them if you can get 80 each thats 160 towards getting the 295x2 up an working ?

I don't think it is good value for money or a good buy in general.

about the same as a 7970 when overclocked, when crossfire is working whilst using a lot more power with only 1/3 of the usable vram.

I'd just get a 7970! It also isn't legacy and will support DX12.

I know the thread breaks me I can't even imagine running 2x5970's when they was new let alone now support has been dropped

This ^^^^

I have a couple of 5970s as well but when used together the 1gb of VRAM really limits things in quadfire as the cards need more memory to use the all GPU grunt.
