In the process of having the whole house decorated/redesigned, and was wondering if anybody had any contacts for qualified CAT6 network installers? Am in SW London.

Cheers

Do it yourself?

Seriously easy, and seeing as you are decorating anyway, the mess caused won't be an issue.

All you need is a crimp and a press.

Another vote for do it yourself. There's nothing to it really and once you've seen how easy it is you'll laugh at the idea of paying someone.

Just pick up a cheap reel of cable off the net, get some faceplated and tools and then you're good to go.

There's not a lot you could really do wrong to be honest.

Other than getting the wires into the wrong positions and using cheap unshielded twisted pair cable rather than foiled or shielded?

To the OP, I agree with others that if you are starting with bare (unplastered) walls, you should seriously consider putting in the wiring yourself - ideally flood wiring. Aside from the appropriate one, two, four or six way Cat 6 loaded faceplates and wallboxes, you will need a Krone IDC punchdown tool and I would STRONGLY recommend a cheap Ethernet cable tester.

You could have a look HERE and HERE.

Cablemonkey is a good source for faceplates - including ones for domestic use such as Georgian, Victorian, Chrome, etc as well as everything else you might need.

Go for it, it will be an interesting exercise, will save loads of grief further down the road and may even increase the value of your house :)

I am not allowed, and also it is a bit complicated. When I say redecorated, I mean we are having the whole staircase torn out and rebuilt. Old 'elf and safety won't let me. Also some of the runs will be up to 60m, so just want to do it properly.

Wont be allowed by who? If it's your house, do what you like!

As for health and safety, just get LS0H cabling incase of a fire.

I'm confused.

Recently I decided to cable the house I live in, which is fully decorated and the walls are plastered, etc. I asked my brother, who is a qualified plumber. He said it would be nigh-on impossible to run cable through the walls now they're plastered.

I then asked my other brother, who has built his own extension, and done building for other people. He said the same thing. "You'll make a mess and it wont work."

But all the guides I've read on the net say there's nothing to it...

If you're the site manager on a building site could you not ask your electrical engineers to do this?
Electrical engineers aren't quite sure how to do it (as we already asked them. - Basically they haven't worked with Cat6 before), and if we're having this stuff installed, we want it done properly.

Aren't electrical engineers more in the business of 'designing power plants' than 'doing domestic wiring'? ;)

Electricians should be able to run the cable as they run any cable to a back box. If they don't know what they're doing after that, you could put the faceplates on yourself.
