Moved into a new build recently and the fence down one side if concrete posts, gravel boards and 5 foot fence panels, down the other side is a 3 foot high picket fence that one of my dogs can jump over quite easily.
I have bought matching posts, boards and panels to make the fence the same all the way around.

I have never put a fence up before and was wondering about one thing.
The posts I have bought are 8 foot, and I plan on sinking them 2 feet into the ground.
The first post is going to go right up against the wall of the house (terraced house), will I actually be able to dig down 2 feet without hitting the footings ? if not how do I secure the post to stop it falling over ?

You should be fine but you could put some heavy duty bolts into the wall if you can't get the depth, of course cut it to length and use the cut end in the ground (unlike my neighbour who has a dodgy angled top to his posts!

Presumably you can get it in the UK but I used postcrete for the posts and works an absolute treat - sets fast too.

Cheers, I did think that might be the solution, however arent these posts reinforced with steel bars, hope I don't hit one of those if I have to drill through it.

As for postcrete, yes I have 8 bags of it sat in my back garden right now (1 per post)

If you're struggling just start off against the house with a face fixed piece of timber without any digging, you never know what services are in there or drains or foundations.

No Services in this particular spot, it is the back of the house, all services enter from front of property, except water, which runs directly under the centre of the house. (both properties)
My only risk is hitting the foundations.

Making a neat job of it is as important as making sure it is built to last, so battens of wood on the wall whilst they would work would not be ideal, especially as I will be using gravel boards :)

Erm,

no neighbour yet as the house is still empty (new build) as for materials I have already sourced them from the same place the builder got them from so that they match :)
