You'll have to forgive a total mac novice; I just got hold of OSX so that i could have a play around with the iphone sdk. Downloaded the sdk, do I have to install each package that I want to have a go with seperately?

reason is ofc, i'm not sure what half those packages are for, even though they have really intuitive sounding names...

There should be one main installer package in the root of the .dmg file. Run that one. All those others are in turn called by the main installer.

the other question I had, is that once I manage to compile a program, how do I test it out first on my actual phone, rather than going through the software distribution channel?

hmm, how much space does it require? for some strange reason when it asks me where I want to install and how much space it needs, it reports 0 bytes....
sorry for the double post!

You need to pay 60 pounds to join the Apple Developer Program before you can install on any phones or distribute to the app store.

yikes. even for testing on my own phone. sigh. not like i want to make money out of this thing. I just want it to do one or two particular tasks!
oh well, lets see whether i can write sometihng for the emulator first.

Yup, if you pay the fee you can distribute to up to 50 phones on an ad-hoc basis. You need the phones unique identifier then you cryptographically sign the application for the phone.

You can use the emulator, but you'll need to pay to get "live" testing.
