Installing Laptop HDD (Missing a part?)

That looks like the kind of connector which has a little catch (for want of a better word) that should sit around the connector on the motherboard - getting a new cable won't help. Normally beige or cream in colour, looks something like a flat U or I_I. When its pushed down it will hold the cable in place and ensure proper contact between the data cable and motherboard.
Doesn't look like you have it - did you notice anything fall out when you opened the flap on the bottom? Am pretty sure you won't be able to find a replacement part. Somebody might have a bright idea where they've encountered similar? Or, if your laptop support it, get an external caddy for the drive for a few quid and you could boot from USB.

as said, that doesnt look like its missing anything, but rather its the wrong kind of cable for that laptop. that cable looks like it should slot into a socket then have a piece of plastic clipped down over it to hold it in place. you usually see these kind of things on CD drives and on some mobo's for front panel connectors and in laptops for other things i imagine.

cant find any pics cos i dont know what they're called lol

EDIT: this is it:

Your right - the connector is specific to that particular socket. I suppose you could try jamming something non conductive in there to get the connection, like a "well cut bit of plastic" - not really going to mess it up any more than it already is, I guess?!
If this doesn't work, a quick internet search shows that the laptop should be bootable from USB.
