Installing Mac OSX from a blank Hard drive?

Hi,

I've got a G3 mac that someone gave me without a HDD.
I've put a HDD in and got a copy of OSX Tiger and tried to install it by booting from the DVD like one would in Windows or Linux.

However, it won't seem to boot. I just get this funny mac-like icon on the screen that won't do anything. The info that I got with the DVD doesn't mention how to install from a blank HDD.

I'm completely new to Macs so any advice on how to get the OS installed would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I upgraded the ram to about 380mb or thereabout and I do have a DVD drive in the box.
