My parents have a late 2009 iMac which is running at a snails pace. It only has 4GB and this just cannot cope with applications like Lightroom etc.

I have read the Apple guide and it says:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US#1

Use Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Modules (SO-DIMM) that meet all of these criteria:

iMac (Late 2009)
PC3-8500
Unbuffered
Nonparity
204-pin
1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM

Can I buy the suitable RAM from OCUK?

Is this procedure easy to do?

Just changeout my 2010 iMac memory from 4Gb to 16Gb a few weeks ago. Follow the Apple guide, dead easy.

Nice.

Can I buy the right ram from OCUK? I'm a complete noob when it comes to memory. I haven't build a PC for over a decade now :D

I'm pretty sure this RAM doesn't exist, except on Apple's website and they want...

wait for it...

£160 for 8GB.

Found some.

As you've recently done it do you mind if I ask two questions.

1) Do you still need anti-static wristbands these days or is there no need?

2) If the iMac presently has 2 x 2GB in 4 slots, can I add in another 2 X 4GB in the remaining 2 slots or do all the modules have to be the same?

No I didn't

Don't think you can mix the 2Gb and 4Gb modules. I got 4x4Gb modules elsewhere, not allow to say where, for £125 included VAT.

I ordered 2x4GB for £65inc VAT so I'm assuming it's the same place :D

Would have gone with OCUK but they don't sell them.

The Apple site does indicate you can mix the modules up, if you can't I guess 8GB of the new modules will still be better than the current 4GB - but I won't run the risk of anything blowing up/breaking by trying the 12GB setup will I?

Also are they safe to touch. May sound like a silly question but 10 years ago you had to wear static wristbands :D

Installed today, no problems. My god it's faster. It's like a completely different computer. Working with RAW files in Lightroom is liquid now. Thanks for the help and advice lads.
