Installing multiple instance of different versions of MS SQL on one box

Is it possible?

I have SQL server 2000 Standard installed. I want to install 2008 standard as well, but leave 2000 as it is. Is this possible?

Would i have to specify different ports for each installation?

You should be able to specify it as a different instance (eg [servername]\[instance]) but I very much doubt its supported.

VMs may be a better option here?

I dont see why not, I run 2 x 2005 instances, 1 x 2000 instance on one box

no problems running multiple versions as long as they are on seperate instances, we do it here for development.

I can also attest to it working. I have 2005 and 2008 installed on the same box.
