Installing new 7900GT

A shiny new 7900GT is waiting at home for me to install after work - I currently have a 6800GT. When I swap them over is their any particular need to re install my drivers?

Also whats the best way to quickly check if my new card is a faulty one (as many seem to be....) - ATI tool and artifact checker? (It's not a pre overclocked card which have apparently had more problems.)

Run FEAR &/or 3DMark 06 & see if it crashes or freezes. Bear in mind though that some cards dont show faults untill days or months later.

If it's a bad 'un it will probably fail in the 1st month or 2. I broke mine in gently & didn't do any overclocking for the 1st month or so -probably doesn't make any difference though whether you clock it from the start or not.

Do some benchmarking with 3dmark and then just play your games etc & see how it goes....then volt mod it, stick a vf900 on it & clock away :D

clean out all your old drivers and install the lastest forceware drivers :) and hope that your gt works lol :p

What are your system specs mate? Would be great to know how much of a performance increase you get as I am currently using a 6800GT.

Specs are San Diego 3700 running at 2.6 ghz - 7900GT running at stock - 2x512mb ddr 3200 samsung ram - 2 sata hard disks.

Decent improvement noticed over 6800GT. Mainly in oblivion and fear running at 1280x1024 - with settings tweaked can keep both to a minimum of 30fps. I've not run 3D mark yet - but will try and post back if and when I do.

Check you PSU temperature as you have two hard drives, you PSU is going to cry.Check for artifacts and check on the registry for your old device id 0045 (6800GT) and change it to the new 0291 (7900 Gt) or re-install the 3d app.

I've a 450Watt psu - doesnt seem to be getting to hot. My system shouldn't be overloading it. Used an online calculator - can't remember the address now - but that listed aprox 380Watt requirement including all my spec - so shouldn't be a problem. Not had any artifacts.

Got a slightly disappointed 3618 in 3DMark06 - about 1400 up on my 6800GT - plenty of tweaking to be done and then I can get the zalman cooler and start overclocking the 7900GT

Your 06 score does seem a bit low, but if that's at stock with a single core cpu, then that'll explain it. I managed 5583 witha single 7900GT, but that was overclocked to about 560/1600 I think. With my second 7900GT, my score went up to 8196. I think that 06 loves dual core cpus, so that's why my score is probably higher as well.

Get that card overclocked ASAP and you'll see a big improvement :D

If you get the VF900CU coooler, be very careful when fitting it. I managed to break my first 7900GT by fastening it on too tight  Luckily, I managed to get it replaced for a shiny new one. Needless to say I was VERY careful when fitting to the new ones :p

Yeah - I will be - I fitted the old zalman gpu cooler on my 6800GT no problems - but thinking it might not quite be up to the job on a 7900GT.

Is the zalman the best cooler to get - are the artic accelero's any good - I've read somewhere the X1 doesnt fit 7900GTs but they are releasing a S1 that does.

It is only single core cpu - and my memory probably isn't the best.

The VF900CU is a very good cooler. Even with the hot weather yesterday, the max temp on my 2 7900GTs after a good gaming session was 69c, and considering they are crammed up in a Thermaltake Tsunami, which isn't the roomiest of cases, that's pretty good in my opinion.
