Installing new drivers, do you HAVE to uninstall the previous first?

When installing new drivers for your graphics card, do you really have to:
boot info safe mode
uninstall the old drivers
reboot again
install new drivers
boot again
done

or you could just install the new drivers ON the existing ones, reboot, and you're done? could anyone also explain why do you have to uninstall first (or not)?

Cheers

Nvidia explained above by other poster with regards to ATI some people like to uninstall them first then reininstall, using a driver cleaner also etc.

I always find I get less or no problems with just installing over the top.

Has always worked fine for me and I have hardly had any problems. Whenever I break my routine and uninstall etc I always seem to have problems.

Then there is the other extreme where people start from scratch and reinstall the OS etc which I think is ridiculous.

If you look after your windows and be watchfull what you install you never have much of a problem.

:D

I always install on top with Ati, as long as you have had Ati catalyst installed on he OS since the OS was installed I think this is the easiest/safest method!

I install over the top as if I get an issue with the Beta's I simply "Roll Back" using the Device Manager. ;)

This matters more to me as I use a 24" CRT so I have it all configured, and this method retains my settings, if it was an LCD it would not really matter.

I always install over the top as well and so far have had no problems :)

If I install 8.12 with the CCC then just install 8.8 for the driver could I have the 8.12 CCC with the 8.8 Display driver then if I don't uninstall and just install 8.8 over 8.12's display?
