i was wondering if there was anyway to install a new motherboard with out doing for a format swapping from a gigabtye board to a asus

I think a format is the best way of doing this.

Could have all sorts of problems with drivers etc if the boards are swapped.

if its xp then theres a good chance it might work better if you boot into safe mode, and delete devices related to hardware thats not common to the 2 boards.

resintall or at least repair is advisable though

dont do it if you have rais or anything exotic going on.

if to much changes windows may require you to re-activate

Personally its never a good idea to do this, your registry will be cluttered.

Also if you have an OEM license you will be violating the EULA.

Uninstalling the hard disk drivers is all thats necessary. If its going from 1 intel board to another it wont even clutter the registry as it will just be intel chipset drivers anyway. I rarely bother reinstalling, but I tend to do regular housekeeping on the computer anyway, cleaning the registry and old drivers off from time to time.
