Installing new RAM problem

Hi all, My computer has been running slow lately and taking long time to load things, after a while I put it down to RAM, of which I have 2 x 1gb sticks.

After some research I went off to buy a 2gb stick to go with one of my 1 gb sticks, to ease the pain for the time being until I buy a new computer in around 6 months time.

Problem... I removed one of the 1gb sticks and put in the new 2gb, turned on the computer and had just black screen, nothing was happening. So I switched them around and had the same problem. I then put the original sticks back in and all worked fine again.

My RAM info is:

Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-8500, DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 4GB
Currently Installed Memory: 2GB
Total Memory Slots: 2
Available Memory Slots: 0

The stick I purchased was:

PC2-5300 Compliant, 2gb 2RX8 PC2-5300z - 55 - 12 - ZZ

The computer expert told me this would be the right one and work fine.

Help please? :)

Try resetting the CMOS then installing the memory. Google will tell you how, it's easy.

Have just watched some guides on this and successfully done a CMOS reset. Though the memory still didn't work, just had the black screen when turning on the computer.

Additionally my computer now believes I have a floppy disc drive which needed to be formatted before use....I don't actually have one :S

Could well be a faulty RAM stick, can't say I've heard of 5300Z RAM before, generally standard desktop RAM will be 5300U or something like.
