Ok...I would forget the SCSI bit. Your drive is being read as 32GB as expected from your last jumper settings.

Stangely, I am having the same problem as you with the failure to format. Mine is an old 10GB disk though. I cant find an answer to this. Did the drive come with a CD? If so you will have a check disk utility.

no cd or book of instructions came with it

I reverted back to the 16 cylinder master settings and tried again

this time the loading got to 5% and crashed with this message

YOUR COMPUTOR AS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT ANY DAMAGE MAKE SURE ANY NEW HARD WARE AS BEEN INSTALLED CORRECTLY IF THIS HAPPENS AGAIN BLA BLA BLA

ERROR PARTMGR.SYS DRIVER- UNLOADED-WITHOUT-CANCELLING-PENDING

I am pretty sure that stop code relates to trying to install XP on a hard drive that is not large enough or incomptable with your BIOS.

Google large hard drives and read about compatability with older motherboards. It might be time to 1, upgrade the whole system 2, choose a smaller HDD (under 137GB).

well i set pins to slave on the new drive and put the drive back in looked in my computor and there it was drive f

it then said i had to format it before i could use it so i did and its now showing 31.4 GB in it

dont know what ive done as it got something to do with the set GB limit ON MY MOTHER BOARD do you think

Well thx for all your help guys it does not seem quite so daunting to have a go AT THINGS when you know some one else is there to ask if you mess up, and is trying to help you out

A BIG THANKS TO YOU GUYS

The limit on the hard disk is set by the jumper on the back (marked '32GB Limit').

Even if you can't make it your Windows drive, you should be able to create further partitions on that drive, to make use of the remaining space.

duke i changed the jumpers back to 16 cylinder master

could you please tell me how can i put more partitions on that drive

thank you

Right click My Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management

This will show the disks/optical drives at the bottom in a list, with the partitions. I've taken a screenshot of mine to show you. You just need to right click on 'Disk 0' (towards the left) and go from there.

For interest, my 10gb hard disk (old hardware) will not format on a newish board but worked fine on an older one. It looks like the failure to format is a compatability issue.
