I hope this is the right forum. I also apologise if this has been asked previously but I can't find it.
I have just installed the motherboard/RAM etc and am now wondering whether I can just plug my current HD in with Windows XP Pro etc installed. The reason I ask is that I have a duel core (x2 3800) processor on board and need to know if it will all be recognised as normal.
Many thnks

Thank you for your help. I shall continue searching using different combinations of words then. Hopefully I will find the answer before I need another upgrade.

If it's a similar mobo with the same chipset then the current WinXP might work but it's always best to reinstall the OS when changing mobos

You haven't searched hard enough. That question has been asked recently & your in the wrong forum.

I think your the one on the wrong forum! A more helpful way to go about things would be to actually link him to the recent thread about it instead of saying 'go search more'- he's already said he'd searched and couldn't find it.

In answer to the question, it's possible that it would work but I wouldn't recommend it- you need to do a reinstall. This may not be possible though if you have an OEM license because an OEM license is tied to the motherboard and cannot be transferred so you will need to purchase a new license. If you plan on upgrading often then I would recommend that you get a retail license as that can be installed as many times as you like as long as it's not concurrently :)

2 weeks ago, some1 had a similar issue. Granted, there were other topics covered in the thread, but the following quote sums it up:

You can't just swap a hard drive between rigs and expect it to work normally. Put it back in the old PC and uninstall the chipset drivers and any onboard devices on the old mobo (sound/lan/etc). Then try it again in the new rig. You may have to do a fresh XP install, and XP might ask to be re-activated.

The almighty search button to the rescue. These forums are a wealth of knowledge, anything you can think of, has probably been answered already.
