At the moment I am using ubuntu and I am wired into the net via router and Ethernet cable. The problem is, i want to install temaspeak and various other applications, how do i install things on linux? when I opened the teamspeak file i was faced with a load of text which totally confuses me :s. Also my OS wont play videos or songs (mp3 files) how can i solve this? Any help is welcome, thanks.

To sort out your media problem I recommend you install Automatix2. It's a GUI application that automates the acquisition and installation of a load of different programs, from media players/codecs, to browser plugins for flash.

You should become familiar with the way Ubuntu handles most software installations. Usually you don't download a file, execute it, and run through an installation wizard like you would on Windows. instead, you'll fire up Synaptic (or call it from the command-line) and direct it to seek, download, install, and configure your software for you.

Specific to teamspeak, I'm not familiar with the program's installation. Is there a readme or installation file for you to read in the extracted tar.bz archive? If so, what do the instructions say?

hi there mate, erm i would recommend using amarok for mp3 as if u have a large mp3 collection then this one will organise it for u. vlc for your videos as u dont need to download any codecs. the other poster is right, u dont really need to download stuff from the net. have a read about repositories and how they work as all u need to do is go into synaptics and type what u are after and then just mark it for installation. ubuntu will then do the downloading and installation for u. i have been running ubuntu and beryl for 2 days now and am loving it. winxp hasnt been booted up in all that time and i cant see it coming back, esp as i have vmware isntalled for any windows apps that i just have to have :)
