Installing OS hard drive into a new motherboard

Any help would be appreciated. I'm upgrading my Sandybridge cpu and ASUS motherboard to a Skylake cpu and MSI motherboard. Can I just swap my OS hard drive to the new motherboard. Or do I need to do a fresh install of windows, with my retail version of windows 7?

Its best to do a fresh install of windows and new motherboard drivers. otherwise there could be massive conflict.
