Is it easy to install an Intel push pin (Akasa AK-965) cooler outside of the case? Will the motherboard bend all over the place? Could I damage something? what's the best technique?

You should be able to do it alright. Just make sure you get a good hold of the board and try not to let it bend too much.

Start at 1 corner, then do the opposite one and repeat.

ive actualy found it a lot easier to fit with the board outside the case. your able to check that the pins are through properly. with my acf7 the clear plastic pins have a habit of bending instead of going through the holes on the board. also as said above push one pin through then do the one diagonally opposite.

Its far easier to do it with the board out, which ever numbnut came up with the this push pin nonsense needs his face stoving in with a shovel.

Cool cheers.

I'm basically changing cases here. Do you think it would be ok to leave the RAM sticks in when I swap the mobo to the new case? I'll take everything else out of course.

wasnt much fun installing my xigmatech inside of case, but the clips were easy enough to push down. push em in 2 at a time diaganaly. getting the fan on was the most annoying part. However if id done it outside of the case , I wouldnt have been able to screw the board down as the sink would be in the way. A removable motherboard tray would have done wonders but for some reason their reserved for super cheap cases or really expensive and rarely in the mid range.

my xigmatech also was troublesome. I installed whilst it was in the case, and it replaced a AC7. Temps were ok at first, but they shot up, and this was because one of the pushpins failed to stay seated. I always remove mobo , and check the pins are FIRMLY seated now. Never had a problem before, but these coolers get bigger, and like the post above, fitting the fan to the cooler does not enable the user to gain any decent access to see the pushpoints, or check them, whilst mobo is in the case. I wasnt happy with my xigmatech at first, but now its fitted correctly (doh!) its lovely and way superior to the AC7 it replaced, by some 18 degrees easy

Ok cheers.

Yeah I was reseating my AK 965 as the temps were shooting up again, but I couldn't be bothered to take the MOBO out and like you said wellibob you cannot get access to one or two of the push pins at all, they are like right under the fan, impossible to get any force on it. I used a screw driver and it slipped and hit my DS3  Luckily nothing seemed to be damaged thank god.

Oh man it was so much easier outside of the case. I think that 2 pins weren't pushed threw properly. I'm idling about 12c lower than I was before. My new case (Antec 900) helps a bit also :)

Cheers all.
