I have just ordered my mum a sony viao pro. This doesn't have a dvd drive. I opted against ordering office from sony as it seemed to be about £50 more expensive than ordering it online.

I just wanted to check the best way of installing Office on the viao. I presume I can download it from somewhere and then use the key that I would get with the DVD's?

Would it be quicker to burn the dvd's onto a usb stick and install it from that?

You should be able to grab the images from digital river just google digital river + your office version.
Then use the key you bought to install it.

Easiest three options..

Buy a cheap USB dvd drive (prevents all future moans directed towards you)

Copy the DVD to a USB stick, make a folder on it called 'Office' or whatever, dump the files in there and then run setup.exe

Share your DVD drive over the network and browse to your machine to run the installer over the network.

Personnally, I'd be inclined to go with the first option. USB dvd drives are incredibly handy.

-4th option, the best one! order Office 365, you pay a yearly sub of £80, or £6.99 (ish) monthly. It downloads the whole thing, this is what I use.

I can get office 2013 home and business for £169. I imagine that this will work out considerably cheaper than 365 as I dont think she will need to upgrade her office package.

My parents have 5 children, so the multi-user aspect of the 365 licence would work out cheaper if we all needed office. as it is only my mum who needs office at the moment buying a one off licence seems better value.

In that case you just need to transfer the files on the disc to a usb stick or something, it's literally that straightforward.

You should be able to download the Office installer and use your product key, I've done it with Office 2007 a few times as my DVD drive on my PC isn't connected.

There is no disc on 2013 & 365 versions, the procedure will be launch the pre-installed office app on the machine then enter your product key and select redeem online. If she does not already have a Microsoft account she/you will need to create one then the setup will finish and activate the appropriate edition.
