New MSI X600 laptop... CHECK
New OCZ Vertex3 120Gb SSD... CHECK
Old Win7 Home premium DVD disc... CHECK
External USB HDD for backing up files already on here... CHECK
USB lead.. CHECK

Right then I'll just insert the dv....

No DVD drive in the laptop. :o *cries

Google..
Oh download the windows7 USB/DVD tool...
Right then... Oh wait, it's the ISO I want. That tool only converts it..

Downloading Win7 ISO from http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msvista/pub/X15-65732/X15-65732.iso

1. Do not like the fact it has "msvista" in the file name
2. worry that is a virus
3. That it isn't bogus.

So I thought I'm now at the point of asking the best way forward from here?
Buy an external DVD writer?

I have an external eSATA port on this thing (but no eSATA devices or cables)

Help.:(

I have the ocz vertex 2 and while I'm using a desktop.. ive never had to install drivers during win7 install (presuming thats what you're doing) and just downloaded the latest firmware from the main site.

Alternatively I think win7 will just recognize it.. without info if you've actually just tried plug and play we're left guessing mate

What he said ^ or... Do you not have access to a DVD drive at all? Work, School, College? Take your external hard drive with you, copy the contents of Win7 DVD.

So I downloaded a torrent.
Used the DVD > USB converter tool.
Fitted the Vertex3 SSD
It found it OK after a quick adjustment
It loaded onto the disc on the second attempt (Froze on the first)

Spent nearly all week installing drivers and "updating"

Finished.

It's done nothing but freeze up, lock up and blue screen ever since.
Pretty much doing my head in now!

Can't use the toolbox to do it though so a bit screwed until I get home (no desktop, no sata lead here)

i had a similar issue recently, needing to install winxp on a old netbook with no optical drive, i ended up buying cheap external dvd rom, under £15 at the time due to them being on offer. didnt bother with a dvd/rw as any burning i need doing can be done on one of the other machines on the network.

i was at this crossroads yesterday, thought id try the install win7 off usb option. formatted the laptop that was running winxp, attempted to install win7 from usb and it failed every single time whilst expanding the files, googling identifies this as a common error. after trying various solutions including removing/swapping ram etc, i just removed the hard drive stuck it in my desktop pc, windows installed fine from the dvd, took the hard drive out just before the first boot to windows stage. placed it back in the laptop to finalise and install all the drivers and its running fine.

Yea the problem now is updating the firmware.
Looks like I have to take it back out of the laptop and either slave it up externally with the original HDD installed and do it that way or take it out, take it home and slave it.

Will be easier to do at home as the PSU in the desktop has SATA power leads. SATA MB.
Sheesh. Hassle.

Is it an Intel chipset/SATA port?

Got Intel RST drivers installed?

If so, disable LPM. might be fixed in newest release/firmware but with LPM on I got freezing ALL of the time, especially when doing Windows Updates. Since disabling it, not one freeze.

Merge or if you do not trust the reg patch, open/edit and manually apply changes. Reboot after to apply.

If you have not got them installed - get them on there, then do the above :p
