I am trying in vain to install a new copy of vista onto a hdd (this is all in a dell xps m1330 btw) that had mac os x on it before. I have reduced the hdd in the setup to one partition that I would like ot install onto but I am being told that "windows cannot be installed to this disc. The selected disc is of the GPT partition style". It does not seem to respond when I select format and start again. All leaving me a bit confused. Any help much appreciated. Is there another way of formatting the hard drive to ntfs before i start the whole vista installation?

You need the partition to be of the correct type for Windows, so you need to repartition the drive, not just reformat it. The easiest way would probably be to use Windows Setup to delete the existing partition completely (leaving you with just free space) and then to create a new partition.
