Got a copy of Windows 7 Retail I'm currently using which has not yet upgraded to Windows 10.

Got a new build (all new components), so I was wondering whether I have to install windows 7 onto the new computer, then upgrade to windows 10 that way, or can I just download a Windows 10 ISO and use the Windows 7 key to activate the Windows 10? (Or do I need to upgrade it first before I can do that?)

Thanks

You can simply install W10 on a clean drive using the W7 key.

This is what I did for my build, worked flawlessly, activated before I'd even got my drivers installed.

Just use the media creation tool to download the corresponding version of windows 10 (home and below get windows 10 home and pro and above get the pro version) so it can either create a bootable USB stick or a disc image that can be burned to a blank DVD, and when you get to the part in the process where it asks for the product key just put the windows 7 key in and it should work (the version of windows 10 that is downloaded by the media creation tool should be that which allows the use of windows 7 keys to install).

Trying to use windows update to do it after the install of 7 would be pretty much pointless since windows update for windows 7 and 8.1 are completely and utterly broken and upgrading would still have to be done through the use of external media.
