Hi all, I was attempting to install Windows 7 the other day and I came across something really weird. I've installed previous OSs before however this version I have surprised me a little.

I've downloaded my XP, and Windows 7 from MSDN. When I placed the DVD (which has Windows 7 on it) and boot from DVD it didn't prompt me with whether I wanted to format etc (that blue screen) it dived straight into Windows 7...

It took a very long time to boot, I imagine this was because it was booting from DVD. Not sure why this happened but surely booting from DVD should have caused it to go into setup?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah as far as i'm aware windows 7 doesn't support live dvd so shouldn't have just booted. Were you using a clean hard disk or did you have XP etc installed already?

I thought that too first time i installed win 7 RC.

The drive management choices came a long way ( futher than other MS OS installs) into the procedure.

I still get to them though so im not sure. Just my experience.

I have XP already installed. I was kind of hoping that on setup I would be able to format the drive and install Windows 7 (kill 2 birds with one stone). Tried exploring the DVD in XP and threw an error stating I could't upgrade...

I just thought maybe its cause I have 2 DVD drives and maybe I placed the DVD into the wrong drive, i.e. I believe only one is on boot. Surely it shouldn't have booted from DVD? I'll try using my other DVD drive and see if that works.

Yeah sounds like the Win7 didn't get to start its boot up/install properly

I always disable HDs/usb/floppy etc in the boot order when doing a new OS. So it can only boot from cd/dvd or fail !

cant see no reason for it to work from there on !

What happened exactly when you booted off the DVD? Did you end up at a Windows 7 desktop?

Windows setup hasn't had the 'blue screen' phase since XP so when you boot off the disc you go into an environment that looks like Windows and once it has loaded all the necessary files you're then given the option to choose where you want it installed and create/delete/format partitions as you always have been.

Hi andshrew I didn't realise the installation took me to a screen like that. It was taking ages so I thought maybe it crashed. How long does it usually take to load that screen? I was expecting the gorgeous looking blue screen.

Thanks for pointing that out to me I'll wait for that interface to pop up tonight. I didn't realise they removed that blue screen! ARGH how amateur of me lol

I thought that might be the case. :)

It shouldn't take very long, but will depend on the speed of your dvd. If it's taking ages you might want to either try it in your other dvd drive or reburn the disc at a slower speed. If you have an external hard disc or large memory stick you could also rip the contents of the ISO to that and boot directly from that to install. There's a few guides around that explain how to do this.
