Hi,

Installed XP on a laptop recently but it hasn't really got the spec's to cope, couple that with the fact my brother is an ungrateful moaning so and so. I have a windows 98 install disk but it's not recognised as a bootable cd and in windows it won't allow you to install it since there's a newer version of windows on the system already. Can anyone think of anyway to remove XP and get on 98?

Can you not just format it?

As stated above, but i don't see why you can't boot from a genuine windows 98 CD....

My advice then would be to download a bootdisk form www.bootdisk.com, boot into DOS with CD-ROM support and to go d:\win98 and run setup.

Good luck!

Bootdisk

FDISK, Remove NTFS partition, create new (active, primary) partition
Reboot
Format C:\
Type "SETUP" then enter, or you might have to do D:\SETUP or E:\SETUP

My sisters fiancee (or how ever you spell it) gave me his laptop to fix up. After getting rid of all the malware and his porn, the laptop still seemed slow. It only have 32mb ram and was running on a REALLY old AMD processor (can't remember the name). I did the following and it was able to run xp much better after.

Right click on desktop, click Properties, click Appearence tab.
Under Windows and Buttons drop down menu click Windows Classic Theme.
Then click on the Effects button. Untick all except Hide underlined letters.... and Use Large Icons. The Large Icons are up to user preference. Press OK and then on the Appearence window click Apply.

Then go into control panel and click on classic view. When the control panel is in classic view, double click on System. When in System Properties, click on the Advanced tab. Under Performance: visual effects, processor schudling.... click Settings. Now, on the Performance Options, click on Visual effects tab if it is not already on. Click the radio button Adjust for best performance

Just my 5p.

Yeah thats a fantastic little fix for any computer struggling with XP

I used to do it on my girlfriends pc as it was really slow and she found it hard to do work on, but she insisted it looked boring and demanded it be changed back to nice blue

ungreatful tbh
