Hi Guys

I am going to be building my pc soon and i wanted to run it without an optical drive as I will be using Steam for games.

My question is, if I was to buy an external usb 2.0 / 3.0 dvd drive would this work straight away when you first turn the newley built machine on?

Im thinking on a new build the usb ports wont work as you may need drivers? and I wont be able to load drivers until I am in windows device manager?

But then im thinking I know you can install windows from usb flash drive so some usb ports must work from the get go?

If this is the case would the usb optical drive in the boot order be under a usb port or would it show as a disc drive?

Sorry if I sound a bit retarded but I've only ever built one rig before and this was about 6 years ago!

Thanks

Most probably yes.
When you boot up and get into the BIOS you'll probably find it has an option for various USB drives.

Basically yes to everything

It'll show up as USB device in the BIOS if you want to boot from it (most likely) you'll tell from the name of the BIOS device which one is your DVDROM drive it'll be USBDVDRWSAMSUNG or similar.

Copy contents of windows 7/8 dvd/iso onto a usb stick and boot from that, so so simple! It does not need drivers as basic foundation support is built in to the bios now a days.
