dont know thw mobo model
i have tried running the live disk of linux but no joy.

Walk us through exactly what you're doing to try and install or even run it from the live disc. What goes wrong, and up to what point can it do anything?

Back to basics is your best bet
Reset the BIOS to defaults
Change the hard drive data cable
Run some hardware diagnostics then if it passes try a BIOS update if there's one available.

I had a Dell OptiPlex GX270 (a bit newer than yours probably), it came with a 2.2GHz Celeron with 512MB of ram and XP installed with no difficulty whatsoever...

Try installing the original celeron again; there may be a compatability issue with any additional ram you have added, as the OptiPlex is quite particular about which ram it will work with, in my case, I bought 1GB (2 x 512MBs) of Corsair Value PC3200 and it just would not run at all, then bought some from Crucial which is guaranteed to work and it ran perfectly...I think a ram incompatibility is the more lightly of the 2.
